How to read the Melbourne weather radar
The colours on the radar show rainfall intensity, not accumulation. Light blue and green are drizzle to light rain. Yellow and orange are moderate to heavy showers. Red and magenta point to intense downpours, often with thunderstorms. Watch how the cells move across the loop: Melbourne weather systems generally track from the west or south-west, so a band appearing over the Otways or the Western District is usually on its way to the CBD within an hour or two.
For a summer thunderstorm, look for small, bright cells that build quickly over the Dandenong Ranges or the northern suburbs and drift south-east with the upper wind. For a cool change, watch for a sharp line of blue-green intensity sweeping in rapidly from the south-west — the cool change itself often arrives as a brief burst of strong wind and showers before conditions settle and temperatures fall.
